New babies do need a lot of things. However, they don’t need quite as much as you might be led to believe. Here are four ways to save on your new baby expenses.
Check Thrift Stores for Clothing and Big Items
Thrift stores are one of the best ways to save on your new baby expenses. You can often find gently used to even brand-new items (sometimes with the tags still on) when it comes to baby items. Babies grow very fast, so they don’t wear their clothing long before they are into a new size. Clothing, strollers, bedding, cribs, high chairs, toys, other big items, and sometimes even feeding supplies can often be found at thrift stores. These can provide a huge savings. If you have multiple thrift stores in your area, check them all.
Browse Online Marketplaces
Another way to find good deals is to check online marketplaces. Facebook has a marketplace where anyone with a Facebook account can post items for sale that they no longer need. You can search your local area to find deals and meet up with people to obtain the items. Parents and others use it often to clear out items they no longer need. These items are often gently used and sometimes even brand new. This can be a great way to get all kinds of newborn and maternity items. Other venues include sites like eBay, Craigslist, and even buy/sell apps that can be downloaded onto your mobile phone.
Check with Friends and Family Members
Most people have friends and family members with kids who are dying to get rid of a bunch of stuff. Babies grow so quickly that their items barely get used before they are into something else. Sometimes things never do get used and they are sitting there brand new with tags or even in the package. This is especially true with clothing. See who has used items you can buy. Some may be willing to just give it to you, so they don’t have to look at it anymore.
Shop Clearance Only
Most retail stores that sell baby items have a clearance section. Clothes and other items move in and out of the stores so fast that the old stock needs to be gone to make way for new. Try to stick to mostly or only clearance items in order to save on your new baby expenses. You can do this throughout your pregnancy by checking at least once per week. By the time your new baby arrives, you should be prepared if you do this, as well as take advantage of the other sources.
