When you’re looking to buy a new or used car, there are tips and tricks to saving a lot of money on your purchase. You just have to be informed before you head to wheel and deal. Here are 4 ways to save when buying a car.
Look for Hidden Issues
Cars may look good on the surface but have hidden issues that could make it a lemon for you. This is more appropriate when buying a used car, but sometimes new cars may get damaged just from being outside at the dealer. It’s good to research makes and models you’re interested in for common problems. That way you can ask if they’ve been fixed beforehand or if the dealer will include it in the warranty. Also check maintenance record if possible.
Take a Mechanic with You
When you’re buying a used car especially, there may be issues on the vehicle you’re looking at that even the one selling it to you didn’t realize. While it may seem like you don’t trust the dealer, having a mechanic point out any problems involved actually is good for both you and the dealer. If you’re dealing with a private sale, this is even more important because there will generally be no warranties or guarantees of any kind.
There are many websites that list prices of the same vehicle at multiple dealerships. Even though not all dealerships are listed on these websites, doing online research lets you know the fair market rate. Check several different dealerships in person, as well as research several different websites to be sure you are getting a good deal. If you are interested in a very specific vehicle after checking around, you can save when buying a car by showing the deals you found to that dealer. Sometimes they will lower the price to match a better deal you’ve found in order to make the sale.
Ask for a Deal
If a vehicle is sitting on the lot for a while, it isn’t rude to ask for a deal. Let them know that you are aware of how long it has been listed and if you saw others like it, use that as a bargaining chip. After all, dealerships need to move vehicles consistently to be profitable. You may be able to talk the price down, especially if there are cosmetic issues that might turn some buyers off from the vehicle. Dealers are happy to cut a deal to at least make their money back if they know you really want the vehicle.
