Travel surveys tell the same tale year after year: the beach is America’s favorite place to go on vacation. There is no better way to relieve stress than to soak up the sun, absorb the positive ions, watch the beautiful waves rolling in and out, and play in the surf. However, for the beach to be the relaxing and fun getaway it is meant to be, you must be prepared.
Take Drinks and Snacks
Being out in the sun, running around on the beach, and swimming all day can quickly take its toll on your body. Even with all that water surrounding you, dehydration is a serious risk. Your best bet is to take more to drink than you think you will need. If conditions are right, you could need up to a gallon of water per adult per day. That is a lot of water! You are also bound to get ravenous. To avoid the hangries, it is a great idea to pack some food. Research food options at the beach you will be visiting to decide if you will be purchasing meals at the beach or packing them in. Either way, it is also a good idea to bring some snacks to tide you over between meals.
Put on Sunscreen
Nothing ruins a beach vacation quite like getting a bad sunburn on the first day. You are more at risk of getting burned at the beach than just about anywhere else. This is because of many beaches’ close proximity to the equator, as well as the reflection of the sun from the sand and water. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays when you’re at the beach. Apply a high SPF, full-spectrum sunscreen liberally over all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours.
Pack Smart
Having fun on the beach largely depends on packing smart, especially if you have kids. First, bring some form of shade like an umbrella, tent, or canopy. Second, pack swimsuits and a change of clothes for everyone. Third, bring plenty of large towels. Fourth, you will want some form of seating—beach chairs, a blanket, or both. Finally, think about entertainment for the day. This could include balls, beach games, sand toys, snorkel sets, kites, fishing equipment, boogie boards, and more.
The beach provides an amazing getaway. Few places offer as many diverse activities. It is fun, relaxing, beautiful, and energizing. Just be sure that you are prepared so that your beach vacation can be memorable in all the best ways!
