Mess is inevitable, no matter how nice your house is. But there are still many things you can do to cut down on potential accidents and disasters. More than anything else, you can avoid the kinds of stains that become permanent eyesores.
Make Sure Kids Eat at the Table
This may be common sense, but still requires a reminder! Every family has something different that they do for their dinner ritual. Some people each take a plate of food and head to their room to be alone. Sometimes the family gathers in the living room to watch TV together. As fun as some of these options can be, it comes at the great risk of your best fixings and furniture. One little slip up in the living room can provide a nasty domestic headache. The much better alternative is to make sure that the kids (in particular) eat at a dining table – ideally over a tile or hardwood floor that’s relatively easy to clean.
Clean Stains Quickly
When a spill does occur, you may be tempted to leave it for later. Being a mom is hard enough without having to jump on every minor chore as frantically as possible! The thing is, when it comes to accidents of that type – leaving stains for too long can make them harder to remove. Even the most intense stains can be taken care of completely if addressed immediately after the spill. Grab the rug or shirt in question (or the cleaning materials necessary, if the stained item is not portable, like a couch) and get working immediately if you want lasting results.
Keep Cleaning Materials Handy
There are a myriad of excellent, powerful stain removers that you can get from any decent store. What you prefer, of course, is up to you; keep in mind that some materials work best for certain kinds of stains. One old-fashioned method is to use vinegar – sometimes combined with water. Distilled white vinegar works best. Many brands and companies also make excellent different forms of stain removers. Some act as a spray, that you can spray on the stained area, let sit for a bit, and then wash out. Others act as an additive in a load of laundry.
Even for the most perfect mom (which, thankfully, you are not) stains are a guarantee. Part of raising kids is a healthy mess! That’s why you should always be ready to take on whatever might occur – mentally and materially prepared.
