As parents, we all want our children to be happy and healthy as they grow toward adulthood. Getting them there requires self-care which can help their body and mind and get them ready for the busy days ahead of school, holidays, and time spent with friends. Here at Thrifty Mama Life, we love to see kids live their best lives, so we put together some tips to help parents practice self-care and live a good life.
Create a Peaceful Home Environment
The first step to creating a happy childhood is to create a peaceful environment at home. Parents are a major part of this. You need to keep your anger at bay and have fun with your kids whenever you get the chance. Parents can get upset for many reasons but they must not let that stress create a problem.
One common culprit that causes anxiety is a messy or cluttered home. Clutter can cause major stress because, subconsciously, the mess makes us think that we are losing control of our own lives and we can take it out on others. If you want to start making a difference, then go room by room and get rid of everything you don’t need and create a space for everything you want to keep. Make this cleaning process a routine so it doesn’t get out of hand again.
Once your home is a stress-free zone, practice self-care for everyone’s benefit. There are many ways for your kids to do this, including:
- Coloring, which StressFreeKids explains helps calm their minds and reduce anxiety
- Staying busy with activity books
- Reading
- Singing
Parents Should Always Prioritize the Children
Along with keeping a peaceful home environment, parents must always make sure to prioritize their kids so they know that they are always loved and appreciated. These days, many parents work from home so making time for the children is sometimes easier said than done, especially during the busier work seasons. Schedule your day accordingly so that you have an hour before they go to bed to read them stories and play games. If you have some simple chores to complete, you can also have your kids help. They will love being a part of the solution and they will carry that joy with them throughout their lives.
Another important aspect of prioritizing your children involves modeling positive behavior in terms of health. For instance, given the stigma involving mental health in this country, if you feel the need to pursue online therapy to deal with work stress, don’t treat searching for an online therapist as embarrassing or shameful. Instead, treat it like any other sort of required medical care. That will send a powerful, positive message to your children.
Create Fun and Healthy Memories
Regular exercise is an important part of a growing child’s life and you can make fitness fun by bringing your kids on fun adventures like going on long hikes and playing sports at the park. Time spent outside is important because the sun provides a good source of vitamin D, which The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne points out is important for bone and muscle health. A fun camping trip can check all of the boxes because doing so provides a chance to breathe fresh air, take walks, and discover plants and animals.
You can also buy your kids toys that can encourage activity, like a hula hoop, pogo stick, outdoor jungle gym, and more. You can also find great gifts for kids that have sensory sensitivities, such as fidget toys, which can create hours of fun. When you’re looking for various home products that help keep your kids engaged in physical activity, be sure to read up on user ratings and reviews. This will help you find items like skateboards, trampolines, and scooters that get the kids outside and encourage fun exercise.
Practice the Arts
While a healthy body is great, so is a sharp mind, so your self-care regime should provide plenty of activities that can help mental health. Many creative endeavors can do the trick, like painting. The act of painting has been proven to help relieve stress. Plus, you never know when your kids could take a love of art to the next level and turn it into a career.
Listening to music is another way to reduce anxiety and create happy memories. When we listen to music that we like, it helps us to alleviate the pressures of everyday life and we can get lost in our thoughts. When special thoughts come to mind, encourage your kids to write them down in a journal, which is another therapeutic exercise.
As you can see, there are many ways – including creating a stress-free home, prioritizing family time, and getting artsy – that you can help your kids to live a happy and stable childhood. Consider the tips here and make new memories with your family.
