Have you ever been away from your home for a while only to come back and discover that it smells a little funny? Part of that is because your home has been shut up for some time, allowing the air to become stale. Stale air isn’t healthy, but that’s easy to solve by simply opening the windows and ventilating your home.
What are some other ways you can keep the air in your home healthy?
Replace Your Air Filters
When was the last time you changed your HVAC system’s air filter? If you don’t remember, it’s probably time to change it. Air filters collect dust, dirt, hair, spores, and more, preventing these things from traveling throughout your home via your heating and air conditioning vents and into the air you’re breathing.
They don’t work correctly when they become too dirty, which is why it’s important to replace them regularly. Doing so regularly will help keep the air in your home healthy to breathe.
Clean Your Floors
How clean are your floors? If they’re very dirty, that could negatively impact the air you breathe. This is especially true if your flooring is carpet. Carpet acts a lot like your HVAC air filters, trapping dirt, dust, hair, dead skin cells, and allergens.
It’s not just enough to trap those particles–they need to be removed. Vacuuming slower will help collect more dirt from your carpet. Have your carpet cleaned regularly as well to further promote healthy home air.
Control Humidity Levels
What is the humidity level like in your home? Air that is too humid or too dry isn’t as healthy to breathe as air with optimal humidity levels. If you need more humidity to make the air in your home healthier to breathe, try using a humidifier or vaporizer. Too much humidity is also a problem, one that can lead to mold growth that makes the air less healthy to breathe. If you need to decrease the humidity in your home, try using a dehumidifier. Open windows or turn on a fan when you shower or cook too.
Most of us spend a great deal of time in our homes, breathing the air within. If you’re concerned about the air quality in your home, consider having it tested. Air quality tests can offer insight into specific air quality issues you may be experiencing. It’s a lot easier to fix a problem when you know what the problem is to begin with.
