Are your kids increasingly addicted to sugary drinks, snacks, and foods? Consuming too much sugar can be bad for your kids’ health in many ways, including their oral health, gut health, metabolism, and more.
Here are a few ways to prevent your kids from getting too much sugar.
Don’t Keep Soda Around
First, don’t keep soda around your house. Having soda readily available can teach your kids that they can have it whenever they want. Soda has an extremely high sugar content and can be harmful to your kids’ health.
Instead of keeping soda around your house, try to teach your kids that soda is a special treat that they can only have once and a while when you’re out at a restaurant or party. Also, try to lead by example if your kids are struggling with this rule. With your partner, avoid drinking soda at home, and never drink soda in front of your kids if possible.
Watch Out for Sugary Snacks
Next, make sure that you’re watching out for sugary snacks. This doesn’t only include candy and sugary desserts. This also includes snacks that are supposedly deemed as “healthy” and “nutritional.” There are often inordinate amounts of sugar in many snacks that are created for and marketed to kids.
For example, certain brands of applesauce, fruit snacks, snack bars, and more have very high sugar content. It may be tempting to give your kids granola bars, but these are often packed with sugar. Make sure that you’re checking nutrition labels before you purchase snacks, as there is often a lot of sugar hidden in snacks or foods that seem innocent and healthy.
Limit Fruit Juice, Serve Real Fruit
Finally, try to limit the fruit juice that your kids drink. Similar to soda, fruit juice often contains a huge amount of sugar to preserve and sweeten the natural juices from the fruits. Even though fruit juice is marketed as a healthy drink, it often contains just as much sugar as soda. If your kids love drinking juice, try to purchase freshly squeezed juice instead, or check nutritional labels to see which fruit juices are sugar-free. You can also try to satisfy the sugar cravings that your kids have by serving them real, fresh fruit instead. For example, you can make a delicious fruit salad made of finely chopped fruit that will have a delicious blend of sweet flavors and soft textures that your kids will love.
So, if you’ve noticed that your kids are getting more cavities and developing a sugar addiction, remember these tips for reducing sugar in your kids’ diets. Remember to avoid keeping soda around, watch out for sugary snacks, and limit fruit juice by serving real fruit.
