Making your own cleaning solutions can be a really good way to go. It can help you save money, reduce chemicals you are exposed to, and result in less waste from packaging. It’s easier than you might think too. You probably have a bunch of things you can use to make your own DIY cleaning solutions in your home already.
Vinegar
Vinegar is very acidic, which is what makes it such a good ingredient in a DIY cleaning solution. Fortunately, it’s not so acidic that it’s harmful for you. Vinegar is great for dissolving soap scum, hard water spots, and sticky substances. Vinegar is also great to use on windows, hardwood floors, or wood cabinets. You can also use it to get rid of stains and bad smells. Just make sure the vinegar is not too concentrated or it can ruin surfaces. Don’t rely on it as a disinfectant either. Don’t love the smell of vinegar? Try adding essential oils to your vinegar solution to help it smell better.
Dish Soap
Dish soap works as a cleaner because it is made of molecules that work to break up oils so they can be mixed with water and washed away. Add some to a bucket of warm water to clean your floors. It’s also great for getting grease stains out of fabrics. You can combine dish soap with rubbing alcohol to create a solution for cleaning countertops. The alcohol will help to kill germs while the dish soap will help to lift dirt and grime from off the surface, leaving your countertops fresh and clean.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which is technically a salt. Baking soda is an ionically neutral compound that is made of a positively and a negatively charged ion. It’s pH makes it slightly basic though. This property is what makes it good for cleaning. It works to absorb odors instead of just making them. Because odors are acidic, they are neutralized by the basic baking soda. If you need to unclog drains and remove crease on a dirty oven, try combining baking soda with vinegar. The way these two ingredients interact with one another can really help with some of the tougher messes around your home.
There are so many ways you can use household ingredients to clean your home. Vinegar, dish soap, and baking soda are just a few of the things you can use to make cleaning solutions that will get rid of dirt and grime and leave your home smelling clean and fresh. As an added bonus, when you use them you may find that you’re able to save money, replace chemical filled products, and reduce waste.
